Since May 21st, I have been 'discovering' the magical city of Copenhagen. There is something in the air that makes me happy whenever I walk through the streets of this city. I look out of the window of my small studio, over the roofs of old houses through the city, even in the middle of the darkness. I feel happy.
The studio is located on top of the Geographical Institute building, which, I guess, dates back to early 1950s: Late art-deco, nicely renovated. It is a surprising building. As you enter and pass the entrence hall, you walk into a circular hall, which is a approximately 4-5 story high dome (meaning at least 15 meters). What makes it special is the 'beauty' hanging in the middle of it: Foucault's Pendulum, moving slowly through the time and never, ever stopping. Worth seeing.
I've been here before a couple of times, but this time I'm actually living here for almost about 2 months. It makes a difference to blend in to the society this way. I go shopping to the corner shop everyday, I talk to people, etc. I even have 'running buddies' by now.
These are my very first, very articifial observations (nothing geographical yet) but what I feel is the easiness of life here. The city is small, well-organized and well-maintained. It is a waterfront and they use the water very well. Cafe's, restaurants, all sizes of parks throughout the city. Nice street furniture and scluptures everywhere. Very little disturbed me until now.
I discover the city bit by bit everyday. I bike but I walk a lot too. Everyday a new piece of the puzzle is revealed in front of me. Today when I was walking around the 'lakes', as they call here, which used to be a river until the 16th century, when they constructed dams and fortifications to protect the city. The river became a long inland lake. I observed many people running and walking, happily and quietly. Lots of runners in this city, I like it a lot, a good motivation for my preparations for the New York Maraton 2008.
Anyways, my next discovery is going to be Christiania..The 'Free Haven'. Very much looking forward to Saturday's walking tour....
